What to Expect

West Falmouth Friends Meeting welcomes all who desire to experience Quaker meeting with us.  Please come right into  meeting and sit wherever you feel comfortable.  Since we gather in silence and meet mostly in silence, you may find others already sitting quietly.  As Quakers, we believe that a divine presence lives in each of us.  Together we wait in silence, listening for this Inner Light or Spirit to inspire our thoughts, feelings and actions.

During meeting, Friends sit in silence, open to the Spirit.  During this time we are joined with each other and the Spirit in a loving unity that nurtures the discovery of truth, understanding, and compassion.  All those attending are responsible for the silence, for its depth and quality.  Vocal ministry should grow from this silence.

When a Friend is led by the Spirit to offer vocal ministry, they will stand (if able), speak briefly, and resume their seat.  Messages from those attending on Zoom will also be heard by those in the meetinghouse. After a time of reflection, another Friend may speak. According to Quaker practice, a person speaks only once in a meeting if at all. While later messages often build on earlier ones, a direct response is discouraged.  Quaker meeting is not a time for discussion.  In its best form, vocal ministry is the voice of universal love speaking through our deepest awareness and experience.

West Falmouth Friends Meeting is a welcoming faith community.  We come to our Quaker practice from many different backgrounds.  We believe that every human being shares in the Universal Light, and we join together in expectant stillness, opening ourselves to the Spirit.

After meeting for about an hour, the meeting will close with an opportunity for introductions and announcements.
